Welcome to the Diamond Mounter channel. A place where I aim to document tips, tricks, methods and techniques learned over the previous 25 years making jewellery by hand.
Trained by the best jewellers in the UK, highly qualified, award winning, I even represented the UK in a international jewellery skill competition I have experience not just at the bench but also dealing directly with customers discussing their preferences then designing pieces especially for them. I have a great deal of knowledge to share.
I was a familiar face around Hatton Garden the jewellery quarter for many years and am known personally by gem dealers, setters, polishers and shop owners in the Garden.
Recently I left London to raise my children in Japan and so now have this opportunity to create video content that will be of use to beginners and interest to professionals at the highest level of hand making jewellery.

Reshaping Claws to Improve a Ring Mount
Yes this mount again.
As I proceed with it, the next challenge it has thrown at me is to make the claws look symmetrically positioned on both the top and lower bezels. Its proving difficult as the top bezel is a slightly dodgy shape. Fun!

Thank you for this! I am very happy to have found this tutorial, I have been wondering how to do this :)
Don’t be bitter cause your not so successful as Bobby.
How do I become a member? Kindly send information. You are a fantastic jeweler and teacher. May Bingham
My ring on my thumbnail is a moissanite! Never had so many compliments in my life. It's the highest moissanite, it's Charles and Colvard moissanite. A conflict free gem stone.
5:28 is when the explanation starts 👌🏻
Plumbers flux
Moissanite is rarer in nature, has many better attributes than diamonds. Almost diamond in hardness. Better in brilliance. Better in heat tolerance. The only reason Diamonds are more expensive is because De Beers controlling it, also jeweler and stupid rich people keep feeding them. Diamond is the very best example of price manipulations.
I have some mother of pearl earrings with a smaller gold leaf like this and have tried to make that design. So pretty! Thanks for sharing😊
The restraint of this man, living in Japan and not making that the focus of his channel.
Its important for me to be able to live my life without feeling like I've got to document every single thing out here.
I would make the point that using a freeform cabachon with backing material you would be better served to bezel set the stone. Utilizing prongs leaves the “Devcon” showing all around the stone. Even a wonky stone needs to be well thought out before finalizing the design.
I try to avoid bezel set videos as it seems all the other youtube jewellers make loads of them
Haha, nice
Why does everyone say it's a fake dimond. It's not a fake anything it's a real gem
I love the word “wonky” though. 💕
Ha ha. The term is called Free Form cabochon. You will destroy a lot of precious stone forcing it into a perfect shape. This way the stone gets to live without being cut up into pieces.
Ha I didn't know that thank you. I nearly called it 'wobbly'
trying to heat the structural support stick and pull it out...lets be honest we all knew it wouldnt work well lol. but its good to show the diff ways to do it, i think the reason it worked so well the second time is because you heated the stick by itself instead of heating the setting much at all. the framework is beautiful and i cant wait to see how the stone will be set without bending the frame or chipping the stone, gonna have to cut the seat fairly deep or tall to get them to bend properly.
I wonder what it’s like living in Japan as a jeweler
I'm so glad I found your channel!
Why can’t I do this in sterling? Thanks in advance.
That is zink metal and it will not keep a edge
Thanks for sharing and take care.
Groovy new bench pin! 😎
Love all the detailed explanations!! Getting the positions straight and depth good is not as easy as it looks to be sure! Also, I only have 1 cat assistant so..more help required 😂
Thanks for the tip, but I wonder what % ammonia your bottle contains
Love it❤
Maravilloso!! Muchas gracias
Very nice! Thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Ok, nice outcome, but I gotta ask…..what the hell was that with the setting burr, carving the relief of the leaf? Maybe I’m missing something. You were way over-revving that, you’ll blunt it doing just a couple of these, and setting burrs are too expensive to waste for that…..why not just use a graver? Or, it was already blunt and you keep a supply of blunt burrs as random carving tools?
How would you use a graver for that? The leaf looks to wide for me to do that with a graver
@@theyakninjaToo wide? How so, just different profile shapes? I mean, maybe he’s only got one as he’s a mounter not a setter, but most people have a few, right? I might be over-thinking this - the first question is always “will the thing I’m thinking of look good”, and then it’s whatever tool comes to hand. I’m just saying, this guy is clearly way better than me, and I just wouldn’t have wasted a £5 burr on scooping out a thin sliver of metal.
@@johnfranklin8147 well ok, this leaf is not too wide, I agree. And he could have used a cylindrical burr, they are cheap :) look for "Anif G" channel on youtube, he does this kind of leaves all the time, all with cylindrical burr, it looks kind of sloppy in the process but in the end it turns out great. On the other hand, if you use a graver, you have to set this thing in wax and then get it out, clean it up, that adds another 10+ minutes and the video title stops making sense :)
@@theyakninja I agree - I hadn’t thought about how to hold the piece - would be fine if it were already soldered to a ring or something….a single cut like that I wouldn’t bother with cement, just hold ring in ring clamp, but as it is, what I would call a frazing burr, sideways, would probably be the thing. That guy Anif G….crazy technique, look how he holds the saw, draws freehand, and yet the piece turns out!
You make it look so effortless! My happy ass would break no less than 6 saw blades in 5 minutes..
Oh that is not supposed to happen - perhaps you need proper technique? Like letting the saw to the work, holding the handle loosely, not pushing or leaning on it. And don't fasten the blade too tight or too loose, both will make it more vulnerable. And if it feels stuck, hold it up and see how the piece aligns - this will tell you which angle you have been sawing in and you can put the piece down in that angle and straighten it carefully or just continue in the same angle ..
"holding the handle loosely" from @katarina2438 is a great advice. It improved my technique immensely back in the day. Also, keep the place you cut close to the peg. Hope that helps
Would be a nice drop earring 👍
But I thought gold and non Furious medals you and yield by cooling them off quickly
So unless you're a billionaire you get good work haha just kidding you everybody wants those kind of customers good that you have them
Inertia
Hey Chris Do you usually wash off the first stage polish before going to final or do you find that it doesn't matter if you don't over apply it
No never. Getting the piece wet half through polishing it is mad.
When buying silver jewlery, make sure it is stamped 925 to ensure you are not getting anything coated.
Im still waiting on part 2
I enjoyed this whole video. Even your keen sense of humor. It was also very educational so I really appreciate how you explained different qualities and how the synthetics are made. Good old plastics.
I just made a ring with one of these stones. Check instagram @crbilton
Oooh, interesting! Thanks, Chris.
This isn't even close to the information I was searching for, but I'll be it's the most practical jewelry making video I've ever watched on UA-cam! I subscribed! I may even join your patreon
Don't tell us, SHOW US; and do so here in UA-cam. Thanks.
Skill is acquired by doing. Not just watching videos. I explained how its done and this should be sufficient for people to understand enough to try for themselves.
@DiamondMounter In other words, "Pay up, that info is for patrons only - this was a teaser to get you to pay!" Worth it I think.
Gotta pay, no free lunch!
Nothing wrong with offering patron only contents, why should he be supposed to share his knowledge with anyone for free?
@@joelaldridge27 Agree. Just like to hear it straight.
👍👍👏👏👏👏💪💪💪😍😍😍😍💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
Thanks for this vid. How did you make the initial marks to guide the drill for drilling? Center punch? Did you do it before forming and soldering the ring or after. Forgive my lack of knowledge, I’m a student.
I usually recommend starting a guide for a drill by using a small ball burr. Sometimes I simply push a sharp point in to the metal
Its not like the haters have enough of an attention span to make it worth your while dude. Just do you. I for one prefer to hear you talk because I always listen first then watch again after work.
Bro talked sht about the GRA vs GIA for at least a full 90 seconds💀💀💀
You, and Installation 00 both sound exactly alike.
for large rectangle stones can do an emerald shape under bezel or an oval one and still function properly. very questionable imo to not have the V in teh peg as a old school jeweler for sawing or resting files when filing or having rings/bracelets angle inward better to work on.
yes my file is slipping about until I get a decent cut in the peg haha
brilliant!
😂😂😂nice to see your humour !
Thanks!!!!
Brilliant!!
